Equity, and Inclusion lense. Goal is to make the library welcoming to all.
b. Code of Service
Question from Board member West on what the library is doing to
support those in the community with vision impairment or low vision.
Director Nemechek: The library website design is accessible for those
with visual impairments. The library staff have done some training -
and plan to do more training on how to provide service for different
populations.
ii. Discussion on how to get input and feedback from members of
different communities. Council person Fahey mentioned the soon to be
created DEI board for the city. They could be a good resource.
Consider having a liaison to the board or having someone come and
speak to LBOT once the DEI board is established.
iii. Action item: Add a statement about serving all/the vulnerable.
Something like: "Library patrons will find genuine consideration for
their needs as individuals regardless of background and abilities and
appropriate assistance to use library resources"
c. Code of Conduct
i. Board member Skladzinski - Question about the necessity of the
portion about children needing to not hang out in teen area
1. This section was taken out in proposed version
2. Children's area has its own specific policy we will review later
this year
ii. Board had a discussion on if the policy impacted all or most library
patrons equally.
1. Decided that sleeping wasn't necessary to include in the list of
prohibited behaviors. Board member Dufresne moved to strike
it from the policy. Board member Gurganus seconded. Passed
by acclamation.
2. Council member Fahey recommended adding "Vaping" to the
line calling out Smoking as a prohibited behavior.
iii. Action Item: Erin Owen will make updates to the policy and send it
out for review.
C. Staff Support
a. Board member Lechner had lunch sent from Empire for the staff. It was very
appreciated! A patron also sent snacks of bags and candy - enjoyed by the
staff.
b. Action Item: President Seyle to send out a sign up sheet for board members
to sign up for a month to show the staff appreciation. Director Nemechek will
include the number of staff/any restrictions. If sending food/treats - individually
packaged is preferred.
D. Trustee Handbook [Erin Owen]
a.
