Recreation Advisory Board
Minutes
April 26, 2021
not reliable this year, so staff made the decision to buy supplies in
advance. Expenses have been high, which included some large expenses
to update kitchen equipment. Overall, the golf course is in good financial
shape. The golf course is being well utilized, and there is no need to
provide discount events to bring in golfers and revenue. In addition,
companies are promoting golf outings.
• David Baril reported hearing mostly appreciative comments about the
restaurant, and the restaurant provides suggestion cards to allow
customers to provide feedback. The beverage cart is out promptly at 9:00,
which pleases the golfers.
• David Dean reported that golf course maintenance is a little behind
schedule, due to the weather. He has had difficulty finding applicants for
all of the seasonal positions, even though the pay offered is competitive
with other local organizations. The City recently standardized pay for
similar jobs within the City, rather than offering lower pay combined with
golfing privileges. Nathan reported that the City used the "Ready to Work"
program to staff the aeration project, which went well. David Dean
reported that the grass will usually recover from aeration within ten to
fourteen days, but that can vary based on the weather.
• The Board discussed possibilities for improving the golf course, club
house, and parking. The Board wants to move forward in the most
effective manner possible, considering many factors, including: creating a
vision, financial feasibility, working with limited space near a flood plain,
assuring adequate parking, providing space for additional uses, and
ascertaining whether or not there is City Council support. Nathan will set a
meeting time for all interested members to meet and discuss both
concepts and process related to this project. This will be an open meeting,
listed on the City website.
• Finally, David Baril shared a sheet which documents the contributions of
golf to the economic health of the community and the state.
Recreation and Senior Center Updates
• Nathan Mosley and Kathy Martin shared the first quarter dashboard of the
Rec Center. COVID restrictions continued to impact participation and
revenue. Compared to the first quarter of 2020, there was a 53% decrease
in membership revenue. However, participation in programs remained
strong, with Silver Sneakers as the top user group. The quarter ended with
a deficit of $2,345. Transfers from the Capital Projects Fund and the the
General Fund brought the ending balance to $382,238.
5
