Balent Second Ownership of 829 Lincoln, 1927-1944
Property records recorded with Boulder County show that in 1927, the Ph. Zang Brewing Co.
conveyed ownership of 829 Lincoln back to John and Annie Balent after they made payments
on their loan. It is possible that the proceeds from Balent's sale of the ball park in 1923 helped
make this possible.
The Balent family had already moved to Weld County, but some of the family took the following
two photos of 829 Lincoln on the occasion of a visit to Louisville, likely in the late 1920s. Balent
family descendants donated these photos to the Louisville Historical Museum in 2009.
Records indicate that the Balents rented out 829 Lincoln, still called 330 Lincoln, during their
second period of ownership. The first set of renters about whom there is information (from the
1926 and 1928 Louisville directories) appear to have started renting it before the Balents took
over ownership from Zang. They are Robert Smith (1890-1966) and Vera Smith (1895-1966),
their children Reba (1914-2002) and Robert (1916-1982), and Robert's mother Peniza Smith
(1855-1945).
From about 1930 to 1940, members of the Cook family rented 330 Lincoln, as shown in
directories. The 1930 and 1940 census records also place the Cook family in the correct location
for their house to be today's 829 Lincoln. The Cook family was made up of widow Serilda Cook
5
