Ralph Grunkemeyer married Helen Hughes (1912-1986) in 1938 and they had two
children, Carl and Lynn. In 1947, Ralph and Helen Grunkemeyer purchased the property
at 601 McKinley and had their house constructed.
In 1950, Ralph and Helen Grunkemeyer then purchased the parcel directly behind 601
McKinley. This parcel, which is now 600 Johnson Ave., is in the Corrigan Addition. They
purchased it from the same sellers from whom they had purchased 601 McKinley,
Raymond and Erlean Berg. They did not, however, build on the parcel at 600 Johnson. It
was not until Helen Grunkemeyers sold that parcel in 1971 that a house was
constructed on it. (In 1951, they took over the ownership of the property that the
Bungalow building sat on.)
This section of an aerial photo from 1962 (facing east) shows 601 McKinley as the light-
colored house at the center, with the empty lot at 600 Johnson Ave. as more or less an
extension of the back yard. On the left, one can see where Pine Street ended. On the
right, the Nicholas and Josephine Stout farm is visible. The Stout Farm became the
location of Louisville Elementary School a few years after the aerial photo was taken.
3
