Recreation Advisory Board
Minutes
August 23, 2021
Page 2of5
Public Comments
Joshua Cooperman joined the Zoom meeting to comment on the Coal Creek Golf
Course Strategic Plan (Updated 2021), which is part of the agenda packet. He
believes that the plan should have a greater focus on environmental sustainability. In
an email to the Board, he posed several wide-ranging questions to stimulate ideas
and conversation about sustainability. Topics included: elimination/reduction of
chemical fertilizers and pesticides, ways to encourage walking or biking to the course,
greater utilization of electric vehicles and maintenance equipment, recycling and
composting availability, and vegetation choices. Nathan will meet with Josh to talk
about his questions, some of which have easy answers and others are more complex,
with many factors to consider. Nathan will report these answers and discussion items
to the Board.
Ken Gambon presented a draft plan for significant changes at the golf course. This
proposal would involve reconfiguring the course and a land swap to build a new
clubhouse at a different site. A new driving range could be located near the clubhouse,
while the former could be used for soccer fields. In addition, the clubhouse could be
designed to host special events. Other possible amenities could be pickleball and
tennis courts. Ken suggested a recreation tax district to fund this project.
Since this was not an agenda item, the Board did not have a substantive discussion
about these ideas. However, Ken will meet with the Golf Course Subcommittee, which
will report back to the Board at our next meeting.
Staff Updates
Senior Services Update
Katie Tofte, Katie Beasley, and Tricia Morgan were at the meeting to report on Senior
Services. Katie Beasley reported many positive steps since the COVID shutdown.
• The Senior Center has been fully open without reservations since mid -May. In
addition, drop -in programs are available once again.
• Special events have been very successful, with exceptionally high turnouts at
the Ice Cream Social in the park and the Summertime Picnic.
• Day trips have been reinstated and have been going well.
• The lunch program continues to serve many seniors. In July, the program
changed from curbside to a choice of Indoor Dining or Grab & Go. In addition,
the staff is encouraging small groups to try indoor lunch together.
3
