Revitalization Commission
Minutes
October 13, 2021
Page 5of6
Commissioner Gorsevski said that as Hwy 42 is being redone, there should be
signage noting a gateway to downtown at the Pine Street intersection. He
recommends asking neighboring communities for their feedback on signage
and material longevity.
Commissioner Williams said a lot of time has lapsed and the community has
changed since 2017, and if we cannot engage the entire community, she would
like the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Task Force to review signage and
make sure it is welcoming to all groups. Interim City Manager Megan Davis said
that the EDI Task Force is time -limited and has a specific scope of work from
City Council. She noted the process to get to where we are now was extensive
and would be a broader discussion that would delay the process if new
engagement was desired.
Chair Adler expressed concern about delaying the process and expanding the
scope. She agrees that someone should be looking at it from an EDI
perspective and perhaps Commissioner Williams can advise. Commissioner
Williams hears the concerns but wants to get it right rather than just getting it
done. Commissioner Smith said there will be people who like/not like no matter
what design is chosen. Commissioner Williams understand and wants to make
sure we consider all members of our community. Council member Leh says
Commissioner Williams point is well taken and that getting it right is important.
Director Pierce said staff does not have capacity to take on a sign redesign
project or new sign family that would likely result from an engagement process.
She noted these comments are coming from a place of good and wanting to do
right, but transparently, staff's capacity is limited and that is why it was
recommend to work with an already existing plan. She suggested that staff
needs to work with e3 Signs to complete the specification process and that the
Commission will have an opportunity to decide how to proceed with next steps.
It was also noted that the EDI Task Force will be making its recommendations
to City Council on November 1.
Chair Adler called for public comment. Mike Kranzdorf said Commissioner
Gorsevski's point about a gateway at Pine Street is well taken. He asked about
the location of proposed signage at that intersection, and Director Pierce noted
it has been proposed on the north side of Pine.
Agenda Packet P. 6
