PPLAB Minutes
October 7, 2021
itv Of
Louisville
PARKS, RECREATION & OPEN SPACE
i. More unique system, less equipment as is higher price point. Individual pieces
are large
• Earthscapes
i. Wood play structures, customizable with different options, colors. Swings,
spinning, rocking, imaginative play, obstacle courses, etc.
ii. Wood structures would give a naturalistic appearance in line with the rustic
appearance of Lake Park and Cottonwood Park
iii. Discussion: Examples of customization? Color, design concepts, mix and match
elements.
iv. Discussion: Feedback from City of Denver (user of Earthscapes)? City of Denver
has been a longtime user of Earthscapes. Earthscapes recently created standard
pieces for greater usability. City of Denver planners, landscape architects like
the playgrounds. Maintenance dept. has said that there is more wear and more
maintenance required vs. other brand structures. This is due to the wood
construction.
v. Discussion: What is the lifespan vs. Steel/Plastic? Wood and ropes will have a
shorter lifespan.
• Public Comment on Play Structures
i. Hilary Nickerson: Excited about playground project, impressed with Berliner
designs. Very unusual and would love to see further offerings. "Natural Learning
Initiative" highlights benefits of natural materials for playgrounds.
ii. Christina Gamba: Adrian (6 yrs old) would like to request a zip line, as there are
currently no options for a zip line in Louisville. Erin: We would like to work a zip
line into these designs. Gnocchi Park in Lafayette is a nice example
iii. Jennie Brazda: 2 year old and 0 yrs old children: Cottonwood Park is very busy
with many age groups. Jennie likes the Playworld Systems option as it allows for
more equipment to accommodate the number of children who use this park.
iv. Brooks: Rowen (5 yrs old): Can we have half nature park [Earthscapes] and half
treehouse park [Berliner]? Rope, climbing structure and nature themes are
favorites.
v. Alex Bradley: 2 kids (9 and 14), live close to the park. Kids would like plenty of
swings (swings are very popular and always in use) and make sure structures
cover the wide range of ages in the community. Older kids like to play
'groundies' and liked Playworld Systems as a larger, continuous structure with
lots of things to climb on and different slides. 'Groundies' is a variation on tag in
which one person stays on the ground with and others are on the structure.
Continuous type structures are beneficial for this game. Entire family loves
Cottonwood Park and would love to continue the tradition of serving all age
groups. Please maintain basketball court, it gets some good use. Suggests
sandbox.
3
