Parks and Public Landscaping Advisory Board
November 4, 2021 Meeting Minutes
Page 12
Ensure that code will be incompliance with Master Plan; however, allow sledding in 'visitor
land' including park lands and areas that have historically hosted sledding.
■ "Visitor Land" falls under a designation of public lands that are not specifically
protected.
■ Desire is to allow for historical sledding while being mindful of damage to protected
areas. Parks board preliminarily endorsed the language (note this meeting did not meet
quorum so no formal vote was held)
8. Cottonwood Park Playground Update
• Majority public sentiment was for the "Playwold" post and deck design. This will also allow for
the most parks equipment for the budget.
• Elements that will be unique to Cottonwood Park: Flooring, equipment entry ramp and 'teeter
totter' that will be wheelchair accessible.
• Swings: Bank of 4 swings, one which will be ADA inclusive.
• Younger kids' area with 2 infant swings, sand area with water feature and small climbing area
and slide.
• Zipline: will require a budget amendment of $60,000 ($20,000 of which is contingency) to fully
incorporate a zipline and make Cottonwood Park the best that it can be as a destination park.
• Playground timeline about 12 weeks for equipment order, which will be placed following the
City Council meeting in mid -November. Estimated time for completion in quarter one of 2022.
Cottonwood master plan timeline to be determined.
9. Median Project Update
• Historical Summary:
i. Renovate medians on our major corridors.
ii. Planning was done and decision made to re -invigorate medians without a complete re -do.
iii. Money was budgeted in 2019-2021; a portion was spent on design.
iv. Preliminary estimates came in at double the original budget for all medians.
v. Plan was to move forward with McCaslin and Via Appia. Town received public pushback on
tree removal. Discussion was planned for March 2020, just prior to pandemic shut -down. The
plan was shelved and money was de -prioritized.
1. Citizen Susan Loo: There is $1M in the budget for treescapes, plantscapes, streetscapes,
capital improvements, etc. Parks Dept. may come up with a comprehensive plan for
prioritizing this money to bring projects back up to standard.
a. Nathan: ongoing meetings to prioritize maintenance needs for current amenities.
b. Discussion around ensuring money is allocated so it remains in place to be spent
where needed, in particular upkeep of the medians (irrigation repair) and moving
forward with strategic planting. Deb Fahey suggested that Denver Botanic Gardens
gives free consultations and nice ideas for native plantings. Group excitement around
planting areas around Louisville that looked nice over the summer.
3
