Revitalization Commission
Minutes
November 10, 2021
Director Pierce provided context and history of the wayfinding signage program.
She recommended that if the Commission desired to continue the project, the
next step is to create a redesigned specification package. e3 Signs provided a
quote for this work of $9,000. She asked for feedback about how to proceed
since the LRC had raised concerns about how equity, diversity, and inclusion
(EDI) should be recognized in the project. One option is to pause the current
project until there is more understanding of the priorities and outcomes related
to the recent report from the EDI Taskforce.
Commissioner Williams appreciates the acknowledgment of the previous
meeting comments related to EDI. Her inclination is to pause based on the
substantial investment this will be and she wants it to be the right signage.
Commissioner Gorsevski would like to incorporate Type G elements with Type
B. Commissioner Smith agrees with a pause and resetting this package to
make it as clean and comprehensive as possible. He agrees with
Commissioner Williams that we need to be more inclusive and look more to the
future.
Chair Adler agrees with a pause based on the findings of the EDI study. She
believes we need a plan and a process and experts to guide us. Commissioner
Tofte asked if any municipalities have added a digital component to their
wayfinding. The Commissioners and Interim City Manager Davis discussed how
City-wide WiFi and platforms for enabling translation may play a role in future
projects.
Commissioner Gambale said based on what he is hearing, he does not believe
we can move forward. This is an important mission. We have the budget and
time to do it correctly. He believes we should pause the project.
Mark Cathcart said he is on the Louisville Cultural Council and they have been
trying to get signage to translate on various art projects around the City. He
does not think the signs in the package work for that initiative, and is also
supportive of including technology in the signage.
Councilmember Leh supports a pause in the project. Director Pierce clarified
that a pause means there will not be next steps or a timeline until another
initiative that brings light to the project.
Agenda Packet P. 5
