At this time, Pine Street still ended at around McKinley. Shirley Varley Bodhaine (1933-
2019), who grew up nearby at 624 McKinley, told the Museum staff that beyond 633
McKinley to the west and south was undeveloped land. This would have been the
situation for several decades. She recalled men going pheasant hunting in the area.
Berg Family Ownership, 1945-1953
In 1945, Raymond and Erlean Berg purchased the three blocks from Lucille Bertolotti.
Raymond Berg was a former Louisville coal miner who went to work for Public Service in
the 1950s. It was the Bergs who began to sell off individual lots in Block 10 of Louisville
Heights and in the Corrigan Addition to people to build homes. According to several
sources, Raymond and Erlean Berg lived at 633 McKinley for several years until they
completed the house that they were building right next door, at 629 McKinley. They
moved into their new home in about 1952. In 1953, they sold 633 McKinley.
Advertisements in the Louisville Times while the Bergs lived at 633 McKinley show that
they raised and sold eggs, frying chickens, and roasting and stewing chickens. In 1950,
they advertised that they were selling fourteen "choice lots" and a 20' x 18x chicken
coop.
The following images show the photo of the house from the 1948 County Assessor card
and a ground layout sketch of the house at that time.
4
