Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
15 November 2021
Bauer shared the probable cause request and criteria. She stated that the structure was
constructed in 1913, with style and structure to meet probable cause by carrying some of the
vernacular elements that speak to the original time period. The house had a long history of
association with immigrants and miners. It maintained five of the seven aspects of physical
integrity.
Mary Van Zale, 633 McKinley, stated that they were interested in learning more about the house
and how to make it fit with their family needs.
General agreement that the structure was eligible. Burg added that the bungalow style was
scattered throughout the neighborhoods and she wanted to see them preserved.
Haley summarized how it met the criteria.
Burg made a motion to approve a finding of probable cause for 633 McKinley and Klemme
seconded. Motion passed unanimously by roll call vote.
301 Spruce: A request to find probable cause for a landmark designation to allow for
funding of a historic structure assessment for 301 Spruce Street.
Bauer presented the request and criteria, stating that the structure was constructed in 1908 and
was an excellent example of turn -of -the -century vernacular style. She shared that it was already
on the national and state registers of historic places and had strong local ties through social
history. Finally, it met all seven aspects of physical integrity.
Dunlap stated that the structure was already landmarked at a national level and by doing it at a
local level the Commission added some protection against modifications. He asked for
clarification if it was correct that a national building could be demolished.
Bauer confirmed, adding that the more local the program the more safety restrictions from
modification.
Andy Johnson, 922A Main Street, stated that they were lucky to have this one still standing in
pretty much unaltered condition, though it did need some love.
General comments supporting the desirability of the structure.
Dunlap moved to approve. Burg seconded. Motion approved unanimously by roll call vote.
Johnson suggested that the commissioners read the nomination form for the National Register
and the list of approved structures. He stated that the write-ups were fabulous and thorough.
Dunlap added that the staff packet for tonight included the form that Mr. Johnson mentioned.
ITEMS FROM STAFF
Bauer updated the Commission on subcommittee meetings and noted that the next meeting
would be virtual.
5
