Youth Advisory Board
Minutes
March 5th, 2009

VIII. Discuss National Dark City subcommittee

Sam reported back on the National Dark City subcommittee project, and said that the
committee will not pursue writing an ordinance for problems such as defining a business
and the lack of support for these types of ordinances in the past. She said maybe the
group could contact City Council about making it a city program with perks, such as giving
tax exemptions for houses that are Dark City approved. Megan V. said the YAB should
make a plan to present to city council for the meeting with them in April concerning the
Dark City project.

IX. Discuss meeting with City Council in April

Need to create a presentation about what we have accomplished throughout the year and
what help the YAB can use from City Council in the future- this would be a good time to
talk about the Poet-a-thon and the Dark City projects. Megan V. and Sam will make a
PowerPoint presentation and have it ready for preview by the April YAB mtg.

X. Report on past volunteer activities

. Megan V. and Sam told other members of the board about the Yess Computer
Institute, where 4 YAB members and 3 others helped to teach inner-city kids from
Denver use computers. They suggested making the computer donation a yearly
volunteer project.
. Heat Relief dinner went well.
. Daddy-Daughter Dance- Hannah said it was a lot of fun and all the girls looked
adorable.

XI. Volunteer Opportunities

a. Lynn Wooton, American Cancer Society, Daffodil Days 3/14/09
Lynn Wooton was not present, but Kriska told the group that Lynn will be at the
Louisville Rec Center on March 14th during the Louisville City Job Fair and the
Teen Garage Sale selling daffodils.
b. Senior's S1. Patrick Day Event @ the Rec. Center
c. Other?

XII. Discuss ideas for the John Breaux Memorial Project and select a YAB
member for nomination to serve on the Memorial Committee

. Don suggested a sculpture of John Breaux, which the Downtown Business Association
is supporting if it is placed downtown. Another possible spot for the statue was
Community Park.
. Megan Valentine was elected as YAB nomination for John Breaux Memorial
Committee.

XIII. Discuss other city boards and commissions

No one attended another city board. YAB Members WILL attend the next LCC meeting
(same night as the Senior St. Patrick Event) at the Rec. Center to speak about the Poet-a-
thon.

XIV. Eyes and Ears

Sam says the CSAPs should be changed because the questions do not fit the grade level
that they are meant for. Austin noted Governor Bill Ritter is trying to stop the CSAP tests.
