Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
March 9, 2022
volunteers for events like the farmers' market this year, the board could take outreach goals off
the goals list.
General Business: Peter wanted to add the goal of forming a Tiger Team to help advise
staff after the Marshall Fire. Tom and Peter are on this Tiger Team and they are ready to help.
Peter also pointed out that the document should change Anneliese's name to Susan's in #1.
Ember commented that City Council's workplan has just been announced and she
thought the board might want to use it to guide board goals.
10. Discussion Item: OSAB Feedback on 2022 Open Space Education and Outreach
Programming. Presented by Ember Brignull, Acting Deputy Director for Parks and Open
Space.
Ember presented the information in the packet, and noted that staff leaves some space
in the programming plan so they can respond to particular requests that come in.
Laura suggested a fire -recovery ecology nature walk. Ember asked if Laura thought the
program should be more holistic about the city's fire recovery, but Laura thought it should stick
to prairie fire ecology.
David asked about the How to Discern Birds webinar. He asked if the plan is to shift
back to in -person classes, and Ember confirmed that it is.
Jessamine asked if there should be a Wayfinding public meeting and outreach. Ember
replied such a program might be more of a campaign issue for public process, rather than an
educational program. But she and the Tiger Team agreed that including the public in education
about the wayfinding process is appropriate.
David suggested some bike -users -focused program. He wondered if there was a way to
promote a -bikes in a program. Ember suggested such a program could be dove -tailed with
regional Bike -to -Work Day programming.
Laura asked if there was a regular community growing around the "in plein air" art
events, as she noticed there were more of these scheduled for 2022. Ember said there is an
artistic community that travels from system to system doing similar events. Staff is hoping to
create some sort of culminating event for the regular participants, like hosting an art gallery.
Deb recommended reaching out to the cultural council and maybe the library to coordinate this.
Laura recommended reaching out to high schools with volunteer schedules, as high
schools often have faculty service coordinators or service clubs. Susan recounted a Longmont
program where high school students are reintroducing red -bellied daisies at Pelle Crossing and
thought it was positive to have students doing real conservation work.
11. Discussion Items for the Next Meeting on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.
A. Action Item: Memorial Bench Recommendation
B. Trail tiger team discussion
C. Property acquisition ranking criteria
D. Operational budget reviews
E. Informational update about the Marshal Fire recovery
F. Information about how the city handles transient camps on open space
12. Adjourn
The meeting adjourned at 9:06 p.m.
