B. Challenges to Library Materials (S. Nemechek)
Nationwide there have been more challenges in school libraries than we've seen in recent
years. Most of the challenges are LGBTQ+ books. The Louisville Library and BVSD school
libraries have not had any recent challenges.
The ALA (American Library Association) put together a document and process to address
challenges. Supervisors are the first line. Sharon will talk to the person who filed a complaint.
This has happened a few times in the past and usually it is a very professional conversation.
Should the complaint continue, the director reviews the entire item and the complaint comes to
the Board. The Board reviews the complaint and makes a decision. If the complaint still
continues it can go to the Town Council.
C. Welcome All (K. Bodine)
Staff Kristen Bodine shared about her Welcome All initiative. She is starting a staff committee
to codify the library's customer service model in a written document. The goal is for the library
to be a warm and friendly place where everyone feels welcome. The intention of the committee
is not to address a complaint, but just to get good practices on paper to ensure the library is an
inclusive space. Kristen is looking forward to bringing these important conversations about
policies to staff. LBOT comments included many remarks about how welcoming and friendly
the library staff are.
VIII. Ongoing Business
A. Superior Board of Trustees update (L. Skladzinski)
Laura Skladziniski is currently on a plane, but Sharon reported that the Superior Branch Library
is doing very well. Lockers were almost filled last year. It is really expensive to get more
lockers and the Town of Superior is focusing finances on fire recovery.
B. Library Foundation liaison report
Will meet in July and report back.
IX. Director's Report (S. Nemechek)
Sharon reported that the door count and circulation was down. Most libraries in the area are
experiencing similar trends. However, online circulation through OverDrive is up. The library is
looking to put more budget into eBooks without taking funds from physical collections. She
believes that some of the door count is down because some programs have limited numbers of
participants due to Covid. She is hoping the numbers will come back with more events.
