VI. Trustee Informational Comments on Pertinent Items Not on the Agenda
None
VII. New Business
A. Library Staff Presentation of the Work Plan
Sharon summarized the City of Louisville 2018 Strategic Planning Document
that included the city vision, mission, core values, and critical success factors. She
shared that each department works in accordance with values outlined in this
document. Sharon also shared that the city is looking to hire a new director of EDI.
This person may want to update the now outdated language in this document.
The library works towards the critical success factors of "Engage Community,
Quality Programs, and Reliable Core Services" outlined in the city strategic plan.
Based on these factors, the library made its own new strategic plan. The three
overarching themes of this plan are Engaging Community, Champion Literacy, and
Spark Imagination and Learning. Every year the leadership team and staff pick
different items to focus on. The library department directors - Children's, Adult,
Outreach and Circulation - updated us on each part of the plan that was relevant to
their department.
For 2022 two additional elements were added to the plan. The first was fire
recovery. The library is working to replace lost and damaged items from the Marshall
Fire (not charging patrons). Also, the summer reading program was rebranded as One
Community Reading Together in an effort to make it feel really community centered.
Additionally, system updates were a key initiative this year as the self check
out stations are 17 years old. Now four stations are completely updated as well as
the satellite branch in Superior.
Engage Community
In an effort to create gathering opportunities, Peggy updated us on the plaza
project. A sunshade will be installed and other outdoor artistic elements that are
similar to the ones that were installed at the history museum will also be put in
place. ADA seating and local art will also be included.
Erin shared that this year the library brought back the art gallery and First
Fridays after a break due to Covid. First Fridays Art Walks have been very successful
so far with an average of 200 visitors per event this year. In June they also had an
African drum and dance ensemble that attracted many patrons. In 2023 the library
plans to have 10 artwalk events and they want to include an art market. These
events also include kids' crafts.
Peggy shared about the Spread the Word initiative. Her department will renew
and strengthen relationships with other city departments and people in our
community including the senior center, low income housing residents, homebound
delivery and engaging adults in the summer reading program. The library will partner
more with the open space and recreation programs and market them together. Look
for more of these opportunities after the very busy summer months!
