Open Space Advisory Board
Informational Item 5: Staff Updates Continued
December 14, 2022
Trails & Maintenance:
9. The 104th St Trail is moving forward with the installation of the stormwater
drainage pipeline. The contractors have excavated, cleared, and graded the
sidewalk and trail corridors. The contractor poured the concrete trail section
going to Dillon Road in both directions in early December. The crusher fines
trail from Empire Road going south along 104th Street is in the process of
being installed as of 12/5/2022. Staff will provide more progress updates as
they are presented.
10. The Davidson Mesa Trail Resurfacing project is in the process of being
completed. The contractors have been working on the trail repairs and
revegetation of disturbed areas. The recent snow storms have caused
delays in the progress of the project's completion. Staff awaits a requested
site review for project close out from the contractors which is anticipated to
occur in December.
11. In early December staff submitted a quarterly progress report regarding the
Davidson Mesa Trail Resurfacing project as required by the Grant process.
Staff will be seeking financial reimbursements in December and January.
Natural Resources:
12. Staff will be hosting a public education event, Meet and Bleat (and MOO!)
on December loth from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Davidson Mesa. Visitors
will be able to see livestock up close and learn how targeted grazing can
help manage vegetation, reduce the need for other weed management
tools, and create a more fire -resilient landscape.
13.Annual prairie dog management occurred on select Open Space
properties and staff also utilized a new method of management on
Davidson Mesa Open Space. Some prairie dogs from Davidson Mesa
Open Space were relocated to a new site in Pueblo in November.
Unfortunately, not all of the identified relocation properties were able to be
relocated by the deadline at the relocation site due to snow cover and low
temperatures. This relocation effort was in partnership with Colorado
Parks and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and will help
support the reintroduction of the endangered Black -Footed Ferret.
14. Staff is working with a contractor to install a new prairie dog fence on the
Jointly -owned Warembourg Open Space to prevent prairie dogs from
moving outside of the prairie dog Conservation Area.
