Sustainability Advisory Board
Minutes
November 16, 2022
Martin Ogle: Martin began by explaining that he's working on a project with high
school students and teachers called the "all careers contest", which is the idea to
connect environmental knowledge to all careers, not just careers considered
environmental, like forest rangers. The goal is to encourage students to think
about environmental literacy in all fields. The project is gaining traction at
Centaurus and somewhat at Monarch. Martin asked the group if LSAB would be
interested in him coming back to a meeting as an agenda item. Martin will pass
information along to Kayla via email to share with the board.
Deb Fahey: Deb encouraged young people to serve on advisory board and
participate in outreach. She also encouraged youth to participate in politics and
city council meetings.
Staff Update —
Kayla explained that five businesses did not recertify in the Green Business
Program. PACE reached out to these businesses and will continue to encourage
them to participate in the 2023 program. The Green Business Awards breakfast
is on December 8 at the Lafayette Public Library. This will be a hybrid meeting
and staff is expecting 60-70 attendees.
Todd asked staff to clarify about the Home Energy Squad audits. 26% of the
funds were used for June — October. The City will continue to promote the
program in 2023. Todd added that we need more quantitative data about
program benefits. The City doesn't currently subsidize the Plus audit, but could
consider it in 2023.
Regarding bag tax, the City is bringing on a part time staff person to work
through the master business list, conduct phone outreach about how to remit the
tax and increase compliance. Kayla explained that some businesses have
completed partial remittance, but the City requires all quarters of remittance
completed. The new staff person will also work on developing processes that the
tax department and auditors can continue. Lev asked what the incentive is for
businesses to comply. Kayla responded that if a business is coded "bag tax"
there will be a bag tax component of the regular tax audit process.
