Approximately 35 cattle will be grazing approximately 20 acres on Davidson Mesa <br />between May 1 and May 15, 2023 as part of the Regenerative Grazing contract. <br />The cattle will begin grazing on the western section of the property and the <br />contractor will "drive" the herd to two designated areas on the eastern side of the <br />property. Staff has created a webpage on the City's website with information and <br />FAQs. See below in Education/Volunteer for grazing event information. <br />3. Staff submitted prairie dog management recommendations which are being <br />reviewed. <br />4. Raptor breeding season is in full swing and staff and volunteer Raptor Monitors <br />are watching several active great horned owl and red-tailed hawks' nests so far <br />this season. <br />5. Herbicide applications on select Open Space properties have been scheduled for <br />May 16 through May 19. Additional days will be added as the growing season <br />progresses. <br />6. Staff has hired a contractor for algae applications on Warembourg and Hecla Lake <br />Open Spaces. <br />Resource Protection: <br />1. With the arrival of spring weather, rangers have noted a significant increase in <br />visitation on Open Space. Enforcement contacts have increased accordingly. <br />2. Rangers are taking advantage of good weather to prioritize bike patrol. <br />3. Rangers will attend Ranger Excellence School (RES), an annual training academy, <br />in May in Estes Park. Louisville rangers played a significant role in planning and <br />supporting RES this year on account of leadership position in the Rocky Mountain <br />Ranger Association. <br />Education/Volunteer: <br />1. Some business volunteer groups and Adopt program participants have already <br />completed several clean up events so far this season including work on Harper <br />Lake, Dutch Creek, and the Coal Creek Trail. <br />2. A successful collaboration of Open Space, Recreation Center staff, Colorado Parks <br />and Wildlife, and volunteers held the Family Fishing Frenzy on April 21. Though <br />the weather was cold and windy, participants had a great time and several kids <br />caught fish. <br />3. Education Event Upcoming: <br />13 <br />
