LL Ctyof ,
Louisville
MEMORANDUM
To: Open Space Advisory Board
From: Open Space Division
Date: June 14, 2023
Re: Information Item 6: Staff Updates
Marshall Fire Updates Pertaining to Open Space:
1. The Wildfire Hazard and Risk Assessment of Louisville Public Lands Project hosted an
Open House at City Hall on May 24`" from 6-8 to review more detailed mitigation
recommendations and community engagement.
2. 700 goats grazed approximately 20 acres on North Open Space from May 21 through May
28 to reduce fuel loads and invasive plants on the property. The goat grazing work was
picked up by Channel 4 and Channel 9. In addition to goat grazing, Open Space staff will
be coordinating with volunteers to remove some dead and fallen trees within the wooded
areas and along the ditches on the property. Additional work is anticipated to occur in
June/July.
3. Cattle grazing of approximately 24 acres occurred on Davidson Mesa Open Space from
May 1 through May 14. The goal with regenerative grazing is to help reduce the presence
of invasive plants, for fuels reduction to lower the intensity of potential future wildfires,
and to improve soil health through the deposition of organic matter. Record rainfall
during the grazing period created a few muddy areas within one of paddocks which were
reseeded by staff. These small patches will not be grazed during the fall grazing period
(TBD) to allow the areas to recover.
15
