at Ancestry.com indicate that he and his wife, Cenia (1870-1946), were from Tennessee
and had three children living with them during their ownership — Robbie, Rossie, and
Sammie.
The current Boulder County website gives the date of construction of this house of
1906. The 1948 Boulder County Assessor Card for 1033 Jefferson, however, states that
the house was constructed "before 1908" and does not mention the 1906 date. Boulder
County has sometimes been found to be in error with respect to the dates of
construction of historic buildings in Louisville. For this reason, it is important to look at
all of the evidence of the construction year, particularly in this case where the County
records themselves state differing possible years of construction. It is also worth noting
that later owners in 1948, when the County Assessor completed the assessor cards for
structures in Louisville, didn't necessarily know anything about when their structures
were originally constructed, and the County does not have independent records from
the early 1900s for dates of construction of Louisville buildings. The house is shown on
the 1909 Drumm's Wall Map of Louisville, so we know that it was constructed by then.
In this case, the large change between Roop's 1904 purchase price and 1906 sale price
indicate that he had the house constructed during his ownership. The warranty deeds
show that Roop purchased the four lots for $200 and sold them (including the extra half
lot) for a total of $790 less than two years later. Roop sold the parcel in January 1906,
making it unlikely that the house was constructed during 1906. Therefore, it is assumed
that the construction date of the original part of the house was "circa 1905."
Michael Forte and Orazia Massaro Forte Ownership, 1906-1918
In early 1906, Michael Forte (1872-1967) and Orazia Massaro Forte (1883-1937)
purchased the parcel at 1033 Jefferson. He had been born in Italy, while she was born in
Colorado to parents who were from Italy. It is believed that they rented out the house,
since they resided elsewhere.
The Forte and Massaro family's association with the Forte grocery store at 804 Walnut is
well documented. The store specialized in Italian food and goods. The store building was
also where they also lived until around 1915. In about 1915, they moved to 801 Walnut,
but continued to operate the store until the early 1930s.
The 1916 directory shows that the residents of 1033 Jefferson (under one of the house's
older addresses of 530 Jefferson) were Charles L. Moore (1867-1937) and Marguerite
Moore (1876-1952). They may have also been living in the house at the time of the
1910 census, when they were renting a house on Jefferson Avenue (that census did not
indicate addresses for Louisville). In 1910, Charles Moore worked as a stationary
engineer at an area coal mine. Their children at the time were Charles, Robert, and
Ralph.
2
