The following photo, which was taken by Louisville amateur photographer Marcello
"Frank" Jacoe, also shows the house, possibly at around this same time. The houses,
from left to right, are 1021, 1033, 1041, and 1101 Jefferson.
Another photo from this era shows a woman standing on Jefferson near this house. A
section of the porch of 1021 Jefferson can be seen on the far left, and the house at 1033
Jefferson is on the right of it, behind the trees.
The Fortes sold 1033 Jefferson in 1918 to Mary Smith Mitchell.
Mary Smith Mitchell Ownership, 1918-1923
Mary Smith Mitchell (1859-1939) purchased 1033 Jefferson in 1918. She was born in
England and came to the U.S. in 1871 with her family when she was about 12. They then
moved to Louisville, where her brothers worked in coal mines. By 1880, Mary was
married to Thomas Mitchell, a Louisville saloonkeeper. He died in 1915.
Though Mary Mitchell apparently lived elsewhere in Louisville during her ownership of
1033 Jefferson, records suggest that she rented the house to two of her adult children.
4
