o Will continue to diversify trees in future (linden, oak, hackberry, catalpa, <br />Kentucky coffee, elm) such that if something infects a certain species, <br />only wipes out 10% of trees <br />• Emerald ash borer (EAB) issues <br />o Has been in area since 2013 <br />o Louisville doesn't have overwhelming majority of ash <br />o City pushed out message about protecting trees early; will help limit damage <br />o As City, protecting high value ash (-120 trees) with organic TreeAzin <br />insecticide and have had good success with treatments <br />■ Works by drilling a hole into cambium and placing a capsule with <br />insecticide inside the hole <br />■ Get three years protection per tree with one treatment <br />o Cherry and McCaslin trees lost due to EAB <br />o EAB has grown a bit but not a lot; we will suffer a few losses in medians to <br />north towards Via Appia <br />■ Trees will be removed and we will replant with other tree species <br />o Environment here may be preventing a quick spread of EAB <br />o For comparison, Boulder has 90,000 ash trees and Denver has 100,000+ <br />o No visible damage from EAB on Ash on Via Appia <br />• Understaffing is a concern, slowly adding trees in order to establish trees and be able <br />to continue to manage <br />Marshall Fire <br />• Finishing up removal of trees destroyed by fire (-90% complete) <br />• Waiting to see if a few trees recover <br />• Trees lost <br />o Arboretum: lost 25 trees, replaced 12 and may replace another 6+ later this <br />year <br />o Golf Course: 162 trees removed at golf course <br />■ This area was already slated for flood control so removal was paid for <br />by other organization (not the City) <br />o City-wide: additional 104 trees impacted <br />• Lots of effort to water and mulch to establish new trees <br />o Rough rule: for every inch of caliper, 1 year of establishment with extra <br />C: <br />
