"sample drawings" do not come from totally different subsets of the Louisville population, but
rather are from the same parent population.
THE SAMPLE COMPARED TO LOCAL COMMUNITY CENSUS DATA
It is important to determine the degree to which the sample taken of Louisville residents is
broadly comparable to demographic characteristics given in the 1990 U.S. Census. This is an
indirect way of measuring the representativeness of the sample as well. However, it should be
remembered that this procedure attempted to sample households rather than individuals. For
those social and economic characteristics which can be compared in some sense, the following
table indicates the observed differences in age, gender, income and education:
Table 4
LOUISVILLE CENSUS vs. SURVEY SAMPLE
Characteristic City of Louisville (individual)
(1990 U.S. Census)
City of Louisville (household)
(1994 Opinion Survey)
AGE:
0-19 31.9% Not Sampled
20-44 53.2% 69.6%
45-64 10.2% 20.0%
65 + 4.7% 6.7%
No Information 3.8%
GENDER:
Male 50.5% 41.0%
Female 49.5% 56.3%
INCOME:
0-$14,999 10.3% 2.9%
$15,000-$34,999 22.4% 13.0%
$35,000-$74,999 53.7% 43.5%
$75,000-$149,999 11.9% 24.3%
$150,000 or More 1.6% 1.7%
7
