In other words, the distribution of
age values the sample is drawing from, is different than that of the population as a whole.
The difference in gender is a little more difficult to understand, but may be attributed to a
combination of factors mating it somewhat easier for non -employed women at home to find time
to fill out the questionnaire; although a greater interest in the survey should never be discounted.
There is no reason to believe that any other biasing factor is operating here.
The income comparison is somewhat more revealing because Census data on household income
for 4,612 households in Louisville is available. The difference in income for Census and sample
figures suggest that survey respondents were from the higher income range in the community,
particularly the $75,000 to $140,000 level. Only 11.9% of the population is at this income
level, while the sample showed 24.3% of the respondents at this level. In addition, the median
income for the sample of 345 households was about $50,000, while the 1990 Census reported
a median figure of $43,379 for Louisville's 4,612 households.
Finally, the sample distribution for education shows that the opinion survey had more than
double the representation from respondents with a graduate or professional degree than the
percentage found in the Louisville population according to the Census. However, as with age
and gender, education is not reported by household in the Census, but rather by individual.
8
