HOUSING COSTS
Not only do Louisville workers overwhelmingly reside in single-family homes, but two-thirds
are homeowners. Housing costs reflect the high -side incomes observed earlier, as almost one-third of
the same respondents report housing costs in excess of $800 per month. But there is no great
number of reporting at the low end of housing cost spectrum, as only one -sixth of the employees
show housing cost of less than $400 per month. Over half of the respondents pay between $400 and
$800 per month.
It is clear that for those in the lower income brackets, finding housing costs to correlate with
the pay is difficult indeed.
Employees were also asked to indicate any additional monthly amount they pay for electricity,
gas, telephone, and homeowner assessment fees. Answering this question caused many problems.
Only about half of the respondents reported dollar amounts for utilities, and the variation of figures
indicate that some were reporting an average bill per month, while others were relating to a hefty
winter monthly bill. The dollar amount averages which appear below are included without much
confidence, but they do show a ball park figure of additional housing costs. More exact was the
response on homeowner fees, which only six paid, and these were definite amounts, presumably the
same throughout the year.
TABLE IX
Do you own? 67% Do you rent? 33%
Please indicate your monthly housing cost within the following Percentage
ranges
Less than $300 15%
$300-$399 1%
$400-$499 10%
$500-$599 14%
$600-$699 16%
$700-$799 14%
$800-$840 4%
$840 and above 1 26%
11
