She felt her back and her neck snap and was horrified.
At the meeting she knew she had a problem, because she could feel the top half and bottom half of
her back like they were coming apart and it hurt to move. Since that night she had experienced back
pain, headaches, nausea, and she has had to miss work. The notion is wrong that if you drive the
speed limit, the speed bump will not hurt you. It fails to take into account many variables like people
with back and neck injuries, people with osteoporosis, people with osteoarthritis, people for whom
any jolt is too much, low profile cars, the condition of one's shocks or struts, newcomer's to the area,
and the willingness of people to tolerate bumps and jolts. She believed the speed bump on Hoover
was improperly installed and cannot be traveled safely at the 25 m.p.h, speed limit. She commented
that the editor of the local paper said so, as he tried it out going both directions. The Mayor told her
so on the phone the next day. She stated the issue is not speed bumps, but trying to control traffic
by installing a hazard, which is a threat to public safety. She felt the City had no business causing
injuries, damaging cars, or impeding the free flow of traffic on a public right-of-way. She suggested
the following: Stop signs, rumble strips that warn of a reduced speed area or cross walks ahead,
temporary or permanent speed readers, hidden cameras, increased police patrols, stiffer fines, and
penalties for chronic speeders that involve their cars and their licenses. She pointed out that speed
bumps belong in parking lots, trailer parks, and school driveways where the speed limit is below 15
m.p.h., not on a major through street.
