Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
July 20, 2009

for sunlight. King then questioned whether the existing structure was worthy of
retention, stating it would take a lot to maintain the original structure. Kings
primary comment was he wanted his southern exposure and sunlight maintained.
Seeing no other public members wishing to speak, Whiteman closed the public
hearing at 7:25 p.m.
Commission Questions:
Muckle asked Johnson if he was able to check in the attic to find the exact
location of the original structure.
Johnson said he was not able to do that.
Muckle asked Johnson where he believed the original structure was.
Johnson stated he believed it was located in the southeast corner of the property.
Stewart asked if the openings for the original doors and windows were still there.
Johnson stated it is hard to determine due to the many layers of siding. He
would need to do more investigative research (soft demolition) to determine
where the openings were.
Stewart asked if Johnson anticipated placing the existing structure behind where
the garage is.
Johnson stated they haven’t finalized the design, but the historic structure would
be relocated somewhere to the west.
Muckle stated if the historic structure were to be relocated then no one could
view it from the street.
Johnson stated they have tried several draft designs to keep the existing
structure in place; however they have not been successful in finding a function
for the structure to be left as is.
Lewis asked what Johnson is doing to determine where the old structure is
compared to the new structure.
Johnson stated he will be removing the material down to the studs.
Lewis stated the design is probably pretty similar to the design of the two existing
miners cabins located in Old Town. Lewis recommended Johnson use those
existing cabins for a general idea of design.
Johnson stated age is the only merit of this structure. He believes that all of the
historic elements of the original structure might be gone. Johnson did state they
would be more than happy to use photos or existing architectural examples to
recreate the structure.
Muckle stated an old photo of the Acme Mine might have this structure located in
the background.
Lewis stated she had a copy of the image and would provide a copy to Johnson.
