Historic Preservation Commission
Staff Report
September 21, 2009
REQUEST:
Demolition
ADDRESS:
701 Walnut Street
APPLICANT:
Stan and Susan Feagler
CASE NUMBER:
2009-003-DEMO
BACKGROUND:
The property owners, Stan and Susan Feagler, applied for a demolition permit on July
22, 2009 for the demolition of 701 Walnut Street. Subcommittee members Whiteman
and Lewis toured the site on June 25 and determined that the home may be eligible for
local landmarking. The main structure, which still retains most of the original
architectural features, is a rectangular structure that has a cement or stucco siding. The
roof line appears to be the same from the 1953 photo attached to the assessor’s
comment card, but the windows on the west side appear to have been replaced
sometime after the photo. One of the more defining elements the reviewers noticed was
the accessory garage located on the north side of the property. It was discussed that
this accessory garage should remain and might be able to be used as a design element
for future construction. Staff has no information on the age of this building.
The reviewers did notice that this house was once owned by a prominent Louisville
family, the Madonna’s, who once owned the Bugdust Pool Hall (next to Joe’s Market), so
it may be culturally significant to Louisville. Because of the above discussion, a stay was
placed on the demolition permit request and a public hearing was scheduled for
September 21, 2009.
Per Ordinance No. 1463, Series 2005 the following public notice was given:
th
The public hearing was advertised in the Daily Camera on September 4, 2009;
th
A public hearing notice was posted on the property on September 4, 2009;
The applicant received notice via both regular and certified mail, sent on August
th
13, 2009.
STAFF COMMENTS:
This house was very likely constructed in the period of 1900. Assessor’s records state
the home was built in 1900. The 1909 Drumm’s Wall Map of Louisville at the Museum
shows a building in that location at that address.
701 Walnut is located in the Jefferson Place Subdivision, the first subdivision added to
original Louisville. Jefferson Place was platted and recorded with Boulder County in
