Open Space Advisory Board Minutes November 12, 2009 Page 2 of 3 Board Updates Justin indicated that when wife runs at Davidson Mesa she often has an allergic reaction. Most recently she had a severe reaction, perhaps due to the green berries that were seen. There was discussion as to what perhaps the catalyst was. Truman mentioned that City Council may move the emergency tower location to the water treatment facility. Adopted Budget Changes Impacting the Parks & Rec Department Joe presented the City-wide sources of funding and budget focus areas. He indicated that sales tax revenue is off about 7% which has significantly impacted City employees and program funding. Justin indicated that he has conducted an informal survey with dog-off- leash-area users, all of whom indicated that they would be willing to contribute funding for upkeep of the dog-off-leash-area. Education Campaign Spencer suggested that the Board should consider what topic areas to present in the coming year. Justin presented that one topic could be to educate the public about the costs of open space management. Spencer said that an open house forum could be appropriate for the setting. Linda suggested that group walks on open space would be of interest. Ember said that during the past year two group walk events were planned and cancelled. Ember also indicated that the following events are upcoming: Children’s Fishing Derby, Pull For Colorado, National Trails Day. There is also the potential for a regional trail day in conjunction with Boulder County on the Coal Creek Trail. Draft a Vision or Mission Statement for Open Space Truman suggested that a single statement would suffice rather than having both a Mission Statement and a Vision Statement. Drew and Spencer both liked the fourth statement on the list provided by Ember. Justin suggested that Staff would be best qualified to craft the final statement. Truman said that some direction for Staff would be beneficial and the Board listed the following words which would be well received in a statement: acquisition, preservation, restoration, education. Joe provided a sample statement that he reworded from one of the statements on the list: “The Open Space Advisory Board will enrich the experience of living in Louisville through acquisition, preservation, restoration and management of Open Space.”
