<br />Electric Power Terms - Following are basic electric power terms_ <br /> <br />Demand - The greatest amount of power required at any single point in time, stated in <br />peak KW demand_ <br /> <br />Dual Feed - Electric power service from separate circuits within one substation or from <br />separate substations and/or utility service providers_ (aka redundant service) <br /> <br />KW / Kilowatt - Maximum demand from an electric company expressed in kilowatts_ A <br />KWis equal to 1,000 watts_ Electric utilities often levy a demand charge_ This will be <br />based on a company's KW demand_ <br /> <br />kWh / Kilowatts per hour - A measure of consumption usually expressed on a monthly <br />basis_ kWh is a unit of energy or work equal to that done by one kilowatt acting for <br />one houL Utilities often bill customers a use charge based on kWh (in addition to <br />the demand charge)_ <br /> <br />Reliability Measures - Stability of electric power service measured by outages plus <br />dips/surges/spikes in power supplied_ System-wide reliability indices are often <br />provided by electric power utilities_ Examples include: <br />ASAI / Average Service Availability Index - Number of customer hours available <br />divided by number of customer hour's service_ Most often 99_8 and above_ <br /> <br />SAIDI / System Average Interruption Duration Index - Number of customer hours <br />out divided by number of customers served_ Can vary widely year to yeaL <br />Indices often range from 15 to 150_ <br /> <br />CAIDI/ Customer Average Interruption Duration Index - Number of customer <br />hours <br />out divided by number of customers out Common indices are 50-100_ <br /> <br />SAIFI - Total number of customers interruptions divided by total number of <br />customers_ Common indices are 93-99_ <br /> <br />Service Types <br />Looped Service - Service provided from multiple locations_ <br /> <br />Radial Service - Service provided from a single location_ <br /> <br />Redundant Service - Service provided from two or more substations_ <br /> <br />Substation - Facility where the voltage of transmission circuits is reduced through <br />transformers and distributed to customers through numerous circuits_ <br /> <br />4 <br />
