Historical Commission
Minutes
May 19, 2010

few months after they have been mailed out and the Commission members indicated that
this would be a good idea so that people doing research can find information about
Louisville history.

On a related issue, Bridget Bacon stated that a Museum volunteer is currently working on
creating an emaillist of members who have supplied their email addresses so that they can
be emailed with information about programming and events.

IX. Upcoming Historical Commission Study Session with City Council

Dan Mellish reported that a Commission subcommittee has met twice to prepare for the Study
Session. While aware of the City's current budget limitations, the subcommittee would like to
request that the Museum Coordinator position be made full time and another full time position
added in the future in order to meet existing needs and to be able to rotate exhibits and attract
visitors. A comparative chart showing staffing and open hours at other city owned and operated
museums in our area has been prepared. The storage needs at the Museum will also be
addressed. Dan Mellish noted that the staffing issues, storage space issues, and the opening of the
Jordinelli House are tied together. He asked if the Commission approves of this direction and the
Commission members indicated that they do approve. All Commission members were encouraged
to attend the Study Session, and the Commission asked that Museum volunteers also be
encouraged to attend.

X. Museum & Commission Projects

A. Update - Membership: Dan has a list of members who have not renewed for 2010 and who
are to be called or emailed as a reminder.

B. Update - History Book Club: Anne Robinson reported on the book club. The discussion
topic for the last meeting was the 1870s and the meeting was well attended. The group will
not meet again as a book club until next September.

C. Update - Oral History Program: No update was given.

D. Update - Louisville summer walking tours: Anne Robinson will be giving walking tours of
Louisville on July 3, July 31, September 4, and October 2.

E. Planning for Museum Open House for Taste of Louisville, June 5 - The Museum will have
its annual Open House, with Commission members and other volunteers on hand to assist
visitors. Diane Marino will coordinate with Aline Steinbaugh and Virginia Caranci to make
pizzelles by the Jacoe Store. Brian Chamberlin and Anne Robinson will take shifts. Don
Ross volunteered to also be on hand. Sally Burlingame offered to obtain name tags for the
two new Commission members. Diane Marino indicated that she could look into obtaining
additional red Commission shirts.

F. Discussion/Direction/Action - Sales Inventory: Sally Burlingame reported that she
researched obtaining copies of two children's books about coal mining for possible sale at
the Museum. These books are "Life of a Miner" by Bobbie Kalman and Kate Calder, and
"Coal" by Ron Edwards and Adrianna Edwards. She reported that for $118, the
Commission can obtain 12 of each book to resell, which represents a 40% discount. It was
felt that it would be worth trying these, as they would add to the selection of local history
books at the Museum and they might be something that parents would like to purchase for
their children. After discussion, the Commission moved, seconded, and carried to get the
books. Sally Burlingame offered to order them.

Brian Chamberlin contacted Carolyn Conarroe about obtaining more copies of her books,
and she is able to sell the Commission 100 copies of The Louisville Story, 50 copies of
Louisville Legends, and 50 copies of Coal Mining in Colorado's Northern Field for $2.50 per
copy, which comes to $500 for 200 books. It was noted that this is a very generous offer by
