Frey says that by
preserving local artifacts a city is, in fact, “archiving the community in which they exist” and that
this act has the ability to “touch the hearts and minds of the community.”
VIII. Museum Coordinator’s Report:
a. Deeds of Gifts from donors.
After discussion it was moved, seconded and carried to
accept the following items:
i. Jean Morgan, photo, miners in Caribou with Walt Pasterski, Louisville resident
ii. Photo of the aunt of Dick Bodhaine who was interviewed for the oral history
program. The aunt was raised in a home run by Mother Cabrini.
iii. Scans of photos of Robert Vaughan, one of the 9 Louisville residents killed in
WWII. Sylvia Kilker has 3 photos in all; her sister Helen was engaged to Robert.
In one of the photos 801 Lincoln is in the back and between the trees you can see
all the way to the old school and Arts Center building.
iv. A Senor T’s tee shirt from Susanne Bell.
701 Main Street.
b. Bridget completed a quick report on the history of 701 Main for the
Historic Preservation Commission.
New Book.
c. Bridget learned of a new book coming out about air crashes in Rocky
Mountain National Park written by a ranger there that includes the crash that several
Louisville residents were involved in. Dave Ferguson worked the rescue as a member of
the volunteer fire department. The book is called Death, Despair and Second Chances in
Rocky Mountain National Park by Joe Evans.
Aug. 7
d. is the Superior-Lafayette-Louisville Joint Meeting of historical organizations hosted
by Superior.
Fall issue of
e.The Louisville Historian. Pete Lindquist is a Louisville resident who
researched and wrote a piece about the founding period of Louisville’s history. It is a nice
piece that presents information we had not currently understood about Louisville’s
founding. We will devote the entire Fall issue of The Louisville Historian to publishing this
interesting work.
IX. Museum and Commission Projects
History Book Club
a.. The club took a field trip in mid-July to the Wall Street Assay
Museum, Nederland Mining Museum (steam shovel featured on the History Channel), and
the Nederland carousel. The highlight was the steam shovel at the Mining Museum which
has been featured on the History Channel and of which the group received an in depth
overview by the chief restorer. Next month the club will tour Erie area historical sites. All
are welcome. Meet Saturday, August 14 at 9:30 at the Museum.
Walking Tour
b.. In July, Anne Robinson gave the first of four monthly walking tours. The
tour was interesting, well presented, and well attended by about 30 people. At $5 per
person it raised about $130.
Oral History Program
c.. This program is going well. DVD copies of the tapes are starting
to come in along with signed releases and summaries. Museum volunteer Katie Kingston
is organizing the collection.
Store Inventory
d..
