SIMMONS, CITY MANAGER <br />DATE: JUNE 8, 2004 <br />SUBJECT: HFAB MEETING WITH MAYOR AND COUNCIL <br />ORIGINATING DEPARTMENT: Land Management <br />SUMMARY: Background for the Mayor and Council on work by and involvement of HFAB within the <br />last .five years: <br />HFAB advises the Department of Land Management, specifically through the City Forester, the <br />City liaison with HFAB, regarding the Arboretum and both new and on -going landscape projects within <br />the City; sponsors an Arbor Day celebration each spring; advises the City regarding landscape <br />ordinances and design guidelines; works with other city boards as appropriate. Further aspirational goals <br />include the promotion of and education regarding sustainable and suitable landscape practices in both <br />public and private landscapes; assistance with development of budget priorities for implementation of <br />public landscape projects; and development and revision, as necessary, of city landscape master plans. <br />1999: Began landscape design planning for the hillside opposite the Rec Center on Via Appia <br />and the comer of McCaslin and So. Boulder Rd.; began revision of HFAB By -Laws and changed the <br />name of Board: from Tree Board to Horticulture and Forestry Advisory Board to reflect the broader <br />work of the Board. Arboretum budget was $62,000. <br />2000: Tree inventory taken by new city forester; began revision of Master Plan for Arboretum; <br />began review of Commercial Landscape Design Guidelines, meeting with Planning Board. Arboretum <br />budget was $62,000; city beautification budget was $275,000; trail beautification budget was $30,000. <br />2001: Provided input for Fishing is Fun project on Warembourg Open Space; design for hillside <br />on Via Appia finished; began discussions with Open Space Board regarding Open Space classifications <br />and recommended plant lists for those classifications. Arboretum budget was $62,000; trail <br />beautification was $30,000. <br />2002: Trees planted at Louisville Middle School for Arbor Day; continued work on Arboretum <br />Master Plan; made presentation to Open Space Board regarding HFAB's recommendations for Open <br />Space classifications and plant lists; worked with Historical Commission to complete landscape for <br />Louisville History Museum property; continued review of recommended revisions to Commercial <br />Landscape Design Guidelines; began review of proposed landscape designs for new Police Building on <br />McCaslin and Via Appia; wrote letter to City Council regarding drought situation, offering the input of <br />HFAB in decisions made by the City regarding drought restrictions relating to public and private <br />landscapes; worked on recommended Forestry Ordinance. Arboretum budget was $62,000; budget for <br />improvement of hillside on Via Appia was $75,000. <br />2003: Continued work on recommended Forestry Ordinance; presented recommended revisions <br />to Commercial Landscape Design Guidelines to Planning Board; reviewed and recommended revisions <br />I IA SUBJECT HFAB MEETING WITH MAYOR AND AGENDA ITEM <br />COUNCIL <br />1 <br />
