LOUISVILLE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
STAFF REPORT
July 19, 2010
ITEM:
Case #2010-004-LA – request to landmark an
historical residential structure located at 1131
Jefferson Avenue.
APPLICANT:
Janice Hoffman
1131 Jefferson Avenue
Louisville, CO 80027
OWNER:
Janice Hoffman
1131 Jefferson Avenue
Louisville, CO 80027
PROJECT INFORMATION:
ADDRESS:
1131 Jefferson Avenue
LEGAL DESCRIPTION:
Lots 9 - 10, Block 7, Capitol Hill
DATE OF CONSTRUCTION:
1932
REQUEST:
Request to landmark an historical residential structure
located at 1131 Jefferson Avenue.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Information from Historian Bridget Bacon
The property, which was part of the Capitol Hill Addition plat in 1904, remained vacant
until the current house was built in 1932. There aren’t any records of any previous
structure being located on this property prior to 1932.
In 1932, John L. and Katie Porta purchased the lot from George Ellsberry and Mary
Kilker Ellsberry. It was during this time they had the current structure built. Katie Porta
was born in Italy in 1898 and immigrated to the US in the early 1900’s. Katie was the
younger sister of Louisville Businessman Lawrence Mossoni. John Porta’s mother and
father lived on La Farge and were Italian immigrants who immigrated to Louisville at the
turn of the century. John later operated a pool hall in Louisville.
In 1939, Pasqual and Loretta (Stout) Jacoe purchase the home from the Porta’s.
Pasqual was the only child of Eliseo and Ann Jacoe, who operated the Jacoe Store,
which is now being operated as the Louisville Historical Museum. Eliseo was an Italian
immigrant and Ann was of Italian decent (American born). Pasqual worked at the store,
then named Jacoe and Son, until he went to CU and earned a degree in chemistry. He
eventually became director of the Colorado Department of Health’s Occupation and
Radiological Health Division. The Jacoe’s owned the house from 1939 until 1966.
1
