Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
September 20, 2010

Koertje opened public hearing.
McCartney presented the staff report and PowerPoint presentation. He stated it was
obvious the windows are not original, but was not sure if the window forms had been
changed. The building footprint appeared to be more than 50 years old. He closed by
recommending approval of the case because the structure had social significance.
Barbara Butterworth, applicant, asked the Commission if they had questions.
Tofte asked about the age of the windows.
Butterworth stated she changed all of the windows in 2005.
Stewart asked if Butterworth was okay with name chosen for the structure (Ross
House).
Butterworth stated she was fine with it, but thought it might be best if named “Ross-
Zarini House”.
Tofte asked if the new windows were wood or vinyl.
Butterworth stated the windows were vinyl and confirmed the previous windows were
also vinyl.
Lewis asked if there were any older photos of the structure.
Butterworth stated no but she had stayed in touch with the previous owners.
Stewart asked if the structure was in good condition.
Butterworth stated it appeared to be solid. She added she has put in approximately
$70,000 of her own money to renovate the structure. She stated an interest in
enclosing the porch.
Koertje asked if the porch was screened now.
Butterworth stated it was not screened, but has a plastic covering in need of repair.
Lewis asked if the stucco was in good shape.
Butterworth answered she thought it was but the wood trim needs repair.
Public Comments - none
Commission Questions and Comments
Muckle stated she liked the application for the following reasons:

Front door detail is nice and represents 1905 – not many like this.

Good integrity but she wished there were older photos.

Social history is notable.

In favor of naming the structure Ross-Zarini.
Lewis stated she liked the application as well, for the following reasons:

Architecturally the building is interesting – probably was originally wood clad.

It is interesting to see the evolution of the structure through the additions.
