Planning Commission
Meeting Minutes
October 14, 2010

Discussion
Traffic Safety and Enforcement at McCaslin and Washington – Bruce

Goodman, Chief of Police.
Russ introduced the discussion with a review of comments previously shared by
Commissioners during Planning Commission meetings. He stated the Chief of
Police, Bruce Goodman was attending the meeting to discuss and answer any
questions the Commissioners might have.
Russ briefly discussed six (6) alternative options for the intersection.
Goodman thanked Russ for the introduction and overview of the traffic safety and
enforcement concerns by the Commissioners for the McCaslin and Washington
intersection. He stated he would answer any questions the Commissioners might
have regarding the intersection.
O’Connell asked what it would cost for an underpass at the site.
Goodman stated it would probably cost over 1 million dollars.
Loo discussed with Goodman the pros and cons of a traffic signal at the
intersection. They continued with a pedestrian discussion. Loo requested the
neighborhood be involved in the planning of the intersection improvements
before a final decision is made.
Lipton thanked Chief Goodman for the increased patrolling of the area by the
police officers. He stated staff and Planning Commission is looking for a long
term solution. He also recommended the installation of the speed sensitive
flashers, similar to those on Pine Street close the elementary school.
Goodman stated his agreement with the flashing speed signs because they are
affective. He noted placement is critical in the success of each sign.
Pritchard stated he has observed a difference in the past few weeks. He wants
one of the goals to be to reduce the speed of vehicles traveling on McCaslin. He
noted the presence of a patrolman has definitely slowed the traffic.
Brauneis thanked the Chief for the open discussion and stated his agreement
with the statements made by the other commissioners.
Sheets stated her pleasure with the opportunity to discuss the traffic and
enforcement concerns. She appreciates the increased enforcement and there will
probably be an added benefit in an increased number of tickets being issued.
She asked what has been the result of the increased enforcement.
Goodman stated the tickets are written not for revenue but for safety. He
discussed the reduction in the work force and the need to put resources where
they are needed.
Lipton thanked Goodman and requested he continue with the enforcement and to
move forward with involving the neighborhood in finding a solution to traffic and
enforcement concerns for McCaslin and Washington.
