Since that time. the Arboretum has been
managed without a formal guiding document. During the spring of 2005. a student intern
from Colorado State University developed a plan for the Arboretum. This plan identified and
addressed future development for the Arboretum. Three separate projects were identified
and designed with details and plans for each project. It is the goal of the Horticultural and
Forestry Advisory Board (HFAB) and the Department of Parks and Recreation to implement
the remaining two projects and others as funds become available over the coming years.
The two remaining projects are: a Memorial "Giving" Garden. and a Rose Garden. The
Central Classroom Pergola was completed in 2008. This amenity now provides a much
needed shade structure (pergola) located over the existing classroom area
In addition to implementation of the Arboretum Master Plan. funding is also needed for
upgrades to support the Master Plan improvements such as irrigation improvements.
landscaping and hardscape improvements. improved seating and amenities.
Why Is this project needed?
The Memorial "Giving" Garden will provide a much needed fundraising mechanism for the
Arboretum. Citizens will purchase personalized paving stones which will be incorporated
into the walkway.
The Rose Garden project will incorporate a traditional design which might have been found
in the City of Louisville around the turn of the Century. Completion of these two additional
projects will add exciting new elements to an important asset of the community and help
develop the Arboretum to its maximum potential.
What benefits will this project produce or what undesirable consequences will
occur if it is not approved?
With minimal investment. these projects will test and generate public support for the
Arboretum.
What realistic options or alternatives have been considered and what are the pros and cons
of each?
Available option is to deny additional projects: Arboretum will not reach its maximum
