ICityof
Louisville
Parks & Recreation Advisory Board Memorandum
November 21, 2024
To: Parks & Public Landscape Advisory Board
From: Bryon Weber, PROS Project Manager
Re: Phase 2 Median Landscape Review & Lessons Learned from Phase 1
Staff requests your input on the enclosed schematic drawings for phase two median landscape
renovations, including "lessons learned" from phase one. Please provide a memo from the Board with
any additional phase one feedback and/or comments on phase two drawings that should be taken into
consideration by the landscape design team and city staff.
For project background, please see enclosed memo "PPLAB Messaging for Median Landscape
Renovations"
Following the 2023 phase installations, completion of 1-year warranty plant replacements and having
received on -going feedback from city staff, residents, advisory board members, Council and the
contractor, PROS Staff have developed the list below of design considerations to be taken into account
during future phases of median renovations.
Design Considerations:
1) Desire to focus phase two on the Dillon Road corridor between McCaslin and 88'
then on the McCaslin commercial corridor, working from Dillon Rd to the North. This
is based on tree conditions (ash species in poor health) and prominence of the
corridor as a `gateway' to the City. (As advised by PPLAB in early 2024).
2) Modify plant species per phase one performance and feedback received. See
enclosed PDF "Plant Schedule" with mark-up comments.
3) Decrease wall height from 36" to 24" so that slopes on the backsides of walls are
less steep and easier to mow.
4) Avoid placing walls in sight distance triangles, regardless of height, due to driver
perception and negative feedback received on Via Appia.
5) Increase tree quantities by including a couple more per median segment.
6) Avoid small shrubs (sumac, yucca) used towards ends of median segments and
replace with larger multi -stem shrubs to reduce complications with mowing.
7) Keep boulders smaller in size. The design quantity was OK, so this is more of a
procurement/install comment.
8) Consider change from microspray to tall pop -ups for planting beds.
9) Consider ways to reduce gravel quantity in median ends (for instance, a perimeter of
rock w/ wood mulch inside to also help reduce overspray).
10) Consider a lighter shade of rock, such as grey/blue mixed with white instead of
grey/blue mixed with red.
11) Reduce quantity of perennials/grasses in bullnose beds by decreasing overall
planting density and quantities.
