DAA
ARCH ITECTURE+INTER IORS
ROOF FRAMING SYSTEMS
Description:
The roof framing is not exposed for analysis as there is no attic access. The north half of the building has a
vaulted ceiling on the interior with skylights that indicate rafter sizing. The south half of the building has a flat
ceiling that should have an attic space, but no access is available. The west additions have shed roofs with no
attic space but skylights in this area also indicate rafter sizing. Additionally, exposed rafter tails on the exterior
indicate some of the rafter sizing and spacing. Overall, the roof structure appears to be primarily original with
some support added in 2023.
All of the primary roof forms are visible from the southwest, indicating different periods of construction.
The original roof structure is a primary gable running east -west with a secondary gable facing south. The roof of
the covered front porch is a hipped roof that is likely original. These items form the original part of construction
and are likely constructed of 2x4 or 2x6 rafters on regular spacing. The entire original roof probably had a flat
ceiling with 2x4 or 2x6 ceiling joists on regular spacing. These ceiling joists likely still remain on the south half of
the building but were removed on the north half when the ceiling was vaulted in 2023. The ceiling height of the
flat roof areas is 9'-6" above the finish floor.
There is an addition in the southwest corner of the original building
(see section 2.1 Primary Changes Occurring Over Time) that has a
hipped roof with a flat ceiling. There is no indication as to the framing
in this section as there is no attic access, but it is likely 2x4 or 2x6
rafters and ceiling joists on regular spacing. It is unknown how the hip
is supported.
The west addition to the north half of the building continued the
primary gable west and has a vaulted ceiling. This addition cannot be
detected in the roof form and is only apparent when observing the floor
framing in the basement. There are two west additions to the south
half of the building. The original addition had a shed roof sloping west,
and the second addition continued this roof pitch. There are exposed
rafter tails at this roof indicating that the rafters are 2x4 at 24-inches
on -center. Additionally, there are beams on the interior supporting
these rafters, but the beam sizes could not be determined as they are
covered by finish materials.
Exposed rafter tails of west additions
are the only visible roof structure.
921 MAIN PAGE - 24
