•
September 5, 2002
Louisville Horticulture & Forestry Advisory
Board
Attendees: Susan Spaulding, Betty Solek, David Russell, Michael Frontczak, Judith Turner, Patty Wilson,
& Teny Cook
Call to order: Susan
Minutes approval — Susan/David - approved with revisions
Public Comment —. No public
Special Attendee: Cindy Lair, Directory of the Department of Land Management
Introduction by Cindy Lair
Cindy's new department will be responsible for all city -owned lands: parks, medians,
roadsides, cemetery, arboretum, ball fields and open space. A Land Management Web
Site is also planned. HFAB information would be linked to that site. Meredith in the
City Manager's office will be the Web Master. Cindy will personally work on:
• the Open Space Master Plan
• forestry plans with David Sexton such as re- forestation issues
• land acquisition
Cindy then discussed the open position for a Project Land Manager whose primary
responsibility will be to implement design plans. An interview committee has been
established with their first meeting being on Wednesday, September 11.
Old Business
City Drought Update
The committee reviewed the proposed letter (from the committee) to the City Council
paragraph by paragraph. Our goal was to make the document more concise. Susan
Spaulding will revise the text per the edits and e-mail the revised letter to all board
members for review.
Hillside Update
Cindy reported from her tour of the Via Appia Hillside Restoration Project with David
Sexton. She was very pleased with the amount of grass which has germinated largely in
the absence of water. She is very interested in getting control of the kochia and bindweed
which have germinated in abundant numbers amongst the plantings. Herbicide use is
planned in the coolness of the autumn. She wants to get the broadleaf weeds under
control before overseeding with wildflowers. Overseeding is currently budgeted.
David Sexton has been talking to Advanced Resource Management in Lafayette on the
design and production of interpretative signs for the hillside. A budget has not been
established with the City Manager. HFAB will be involved in the design reviews for the
signage.
