Library Board of Trustees
Meeting Minutes—Draft
SEPTEMBER 13, 2012
of user records, and to remove the current Service Policy as well. The Board
unanimously agreed.
2)Youth Services
Beth explained that the Library used to combine children and teen services, but
the two have been separated since the Library moved to the new building in 2006,
and this terminology is no longer used.
One of the key changes in the policy relates to the age of unattended children.
Beth reviewed the suggested change from age 7 to age 9. There was a lengthy
discussion on this issue, and the Board adopted the revised policy with a vote of
four in favor (Dinauer, Mahoney, Pennington, Schuman), one opposed (Davis), and
one abstention (Edelstein).
3)Computer Use
Even though this policy was revised in 2011, Beth cited a couple of issues that
have become more of a problem over the past couple of years and were not
addressed at that time. Specifically, these issues relate to 1) unauthorized use of
copyrighted materials and 2) the Library’s responsibility for the integrity of an
individual’s work while using Library computers. After a brief discussion, Jeannie
moved to adopt the revised policy. The Board unanimously agreed.
C.Update on City Council Study Session
1)October 23, 7:00 pm.
Meredith and Sherri are still scheduled to make the presentation on Board goals
and accomplishments. Jeannie again encouraged as many board members as
possible to attend. Hank noted that he will not be able to attend.
IX.Director’s Report
A.Statistics
In particular, Beth discussed the Summer Reading Program (SRP). She noted that
registrations for the adult, teen, and children’s program are all up from last year. This
year, there was a 60% program completion rate for children, which is very high.
Children comprise the most registrations, with K-3 representing the largest group of
children. Superior registrations represented 25% for children; 17% for teens; and 10% for
adults.
This year children got to choose a new book, which was funded by Library Foundation.
This was very popular and the Library will likely continue to do this. Also, children once
again reached their charity donation goal of 14,000 hours read, and the Library
Foundation donated $500 to a pre-determined charity. Shari noted that it would be
wonderful to include children in the process to choose the nonprofit for the $500
donation. Beth will work with the Foundation and staff to implement this for the 2013
SRP.
