Library Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes —DRAFT NOVEMBER 8, 2012 Page 2 of 5 VII. Ongoing Business A. Update on the City's Comprehensive Plan (Gavin McMillan, Planning Dept.) Due to a miscommunication, Gavin McMillan did not make a presentation to the Board. B. Strategic Planning 1) Vote on new Mission Statement The Board unanimously approved adoption of the newly developed mission statement, The Library's mission is to inform, involve, and inspire all the communities we serve. 2) Review Goals Et Objectives, Draft 3 The Board and members of the Library staff comprise the 2013 Strategic Planning Committee. Based on its work thus far, the Committee has determined six goals upon which to construct the Strategic Plan and the individual work plans that will guide Library staff in meeting these five goals. Following is a summary of the discussion and action items related to the six goals. Goal #1: Build Community One word change was proposed, as well as a suggestion from Shari that the Library include each goal statement as a tag line to provide context for the individual goal. Goal #2: Expanding Perceptions Per comments by Beth, the Board agreed that this is not a goal per se but provides a good foundation for addressing how to make the public aware of what the Libraiy is doing to reach its goals. This item is removed from the list of goals and will be used to shape individual work plans. Goal #3: Promote Literacy Sandy noted that ESL (English as a Second Language) could be added to the work plan if there is a defined need. Staff members noted that the neighboring Lafayette library has a large collection and story time, too. Louisville does have ESL materials and online resources and has supported ESL groups requesting use of the meeting room. In the opinion of professional staff, the needs of Louisville's service area, coupled with the availability of shared and online resources including language learning, have thus far been meeting community needs. Goal #4: Spark Imagination No comments or changes suggested. Goal #5: Foster Technological Proficiency The Board unanimously agreed on a few minor changes. Goal #6: Preserve and Promote Our Past A new goal statement was crafted and unanimously agreed upon by the Board. Old: The Library shares documents related to Louisville's past through electronic access, programming, and displays New: The Library provides access to Louisville's past.
