Planning Commission
Meeting Minutes
December 13, 2012

McClure stated it allows the building to face the park and it allows the project to
maintain the Gateway concept for the site.
Brauneis discussed the following:
Distance of building from HWY 42.

Surface to be used in access points and parking.

McCartney stated the building is 220’ from the property line of HWY 42. He confirmed
the access points and parking areas will be a hard surface such as asphalt or
concrete.
Pritchard inquired and McCartney replied about the different aspects of the proposed
signage.
Other developments with similar signage.

None.

Is it considered a sign or a mural?

Sign because it advertises a specific business.

How is the sign lit?

Goose neck fixtures from the top of the building, downcast lighting.

Public Comment
Michael Menaker, 1827 W. Chokecherry Dr; stated his support of the project because
it provides a good solution to a community need. He stated the building serves a
specific purpose and the signage requirements in the CDDSG should not be applied
to this project. He requested the Commission approve the full signage waiver as
requested.
Lori Jones, 269 McKinley, discussed the need for the wall signage and the fact that
the proposed site will have a bike connection to the “Art Underground” in downtown
Louisville. She stated the new Art Center will make a statement about how important
the ‘arts’ are to Louisville. She stated they will continue to be a non-profit program.
Steve Spence, 931 Treece St, representing the Steel Ranch HOA stated their
support of the project.
Additional questions from Commissioners
Brauneis asked how essential the eight (8) temporary parking spaces are to the
project.
McCartney stated the eight (8) spaces will bring the number of required spaces into
compliance with the CDDSG.
Moline inquired about other signs for the building.
McCartney stated the other signs comply with the design standards and are allowed.
Summary Comments and Request from Staff
McCartney reviewed the difference between a sign and a mural to clarify that the
requested signage is a sign and not a mural.
Brauneis asked the applicants how they felt about the reduced sign area.
McClure stated he supports the applicants requested signage comments.
