IIDiscussion item for our next meeting.
16 I believe that we should respond to the concerns stated by the CCCT
members at our last meeting. The following contains my ideas. Please
review this and amend, critique, etc. Other ideas?
II Mary
II The Louisville Arts & Humanities Council (LAHC) heard a request from
various members of the Coal Creek Community Theater (CCCT) to change the
Louisville Center for the Arts tenant contract between three organize-
II tion, the City and both the LAHC and the Louisville Art Association
(LAA) , to a contract between two agencies, the City and the LAHC as an ,
overseeing agency for all art groups. This request was made because the
CCCT members feel that there is a need for more equality in scheduling
li and decision-making between the various art groups that use the
building.
1 In response to this request, the LAHC must declare that it has no
governing authority by which to change this contract. The LAHC is a
project-oriented group which seeks to obtain grant funding and complete
I projects that will provide art and art events for the community. As a
designated city agency and a non-profit organization, we are also able
to sponsor grants for other arts organizations. However, we have no
1 authority over arts groups within the City and certainly no decision-
making power within the City government. If the LAHC were requested by
the City to serve in the capacity of an overseeing agency for the
Louisville Center for the Arts, this would be a change in the function
bof the group and would have to be considered carefully.
The initiative to secure the former Community Building for use as an
II arts building came originally from the LAA. The LAA invited the LAHC
to join them in the proposal to City Council. The LAA has been a good
tenant and has sponsored art shows for the community as well as creating
II art workshops which are gaining a following. The LAA has worked
cooperatively with the LAHC and the City. The LAA has no reason to
voluntarily drop its name from a contract which it was instrumental in
obtaining.
IThe LAHC and the LAA stated in the proposal for the building that it
would be available for use by other community arts organizations. Both
II the LAHC and the LAA are making a greater effort to include all arts
groups in decisions regarding the building and to schedule the building
with equity to all groups. The formation of the building committee with
II representatives from all of the groups and the proposed scheduling
procedure with a scheduling committee with representative from all
groups are examples of efforts to involve all of the arts groups in
decision-making and scheduling. The establishment of an Advisory Board
II and liaisons between the CCCT and the LAHC are means by which com-
munication between groups may be improved.
II There have been some miscommunications and scheduling problems in the
past. We are glad that members of the CCCT brought the concerns to our
Pattention and we have changed some policies and structures to deal with
scheduling and decision-making in a more equitable manner. We hope that
the new communication avenues will avoid most problems and help us to
solve conflicts when they do arise. We look forward to a good relation-
ship between all of the arts groups who contribute to the success of the
' Louisville Center for the Arts.
