ment of the traffic signal controller, it would also
allow an upgrade of the equipment so that additional
efficiency could be gained at the intersection by
allowing various programs by time of day to accom-
modate different traffic patterns. Public Works
staff is recommending authorization to obtain
bids/quotes on replacement equipment for the traffic
signal controller alt the intersection described.
Anderson stated that: the malfunctioning of the light
does create some serious problems with proper
traffic flow. ThreE~-way traffic signalization is
more difficult to acthieve than a four-way
intersection. However, that opportunity did not
exist at the time thhat intersection was developed.
"The only way we can begin to solve the problem is
to get adequate signalization."
Phare explained that: the new equipment is compatible
and is from the same' vendor that provided the
recently installed equipment on South Boulder Road.
Ultimately, the conitrollability could be maintain by
the computer in the Public Works Department.
Szymanski moved than the Public Works Department be
authorized to obtain bids/quotes on replacement
equipment for the traffic signal controller at the
intersection descri',bed. Anderson seconded.
Unanimous.
Phare also stated that the City of Louisville has
another piece of equipment that is in need of
replacement - the vehicle washing equipment located
at City Shops. A major component of the vehicle
washing equipment failed. An evaluation of the
existing equipment :indicates other parts showing
signs of wear. Repair of the equipment could be
a continual effort <~s other parts fail. Preliminary
estimates to replace the equipment indicates new
vehicle washing equipment could be obtained for
approximately $2,001) to $2,500.
Mayor Fauson moved ithat the Public Works Department
be authorized to purchase vehicle washing equipment
for $2,000 to $2,500. Szymanski seconded.
Sackett asked if this was an appropriate priority
from the savings on the South Boulder Road project.
Sackett stated that he would feel more comfortable
if the Finance Committee looked at the request. "It
is a question of process. I don't know if it is
legitimate or not. Technically, I would rather have
it go through the normal process."
7
