Josephine Stout Ownership, 1948
Josephine Stout purchased 301 Pine in 1948 and owned it for several months that year.
A Louisville directory from 1949 listed her as living at 301 Pine. (It is not clear whether
the 1949 directory listed her because the directory was put together in 1948 or if she in
1949 rented the house from the person who purchased it from her.)
Josephine Stout (1872-1950) was the widow of Nicholas Stout, who had died in 1938.
They had operated a farm just to the south of this area, on the land that is now the site
of Louisville Elementary School.
Margaret Mancini Ownership, 1948-1949
From 1948 to 1949, the owner of 301 Pine was Margaret Gosselin Mancini (1894-1976).
She had been born in France and married Tony Mancini (1884-1955), who had been
born in Italy. This may have been a rental during her ownership, as directories indicate
that the couple continued to live in their home in the Frenchtown neighborhood.
Buckalew Family Ownership, 1949-1955
In 1955, Dixie Parkin Buckalew (born 1927) and Christopher Buckalew (1922-1996)
purchased 301 Pine and it became their residence. Dixie Parkin Buckalew had grown up
on Parkview St. in Louisville as the daughter of Richard Parkin and Mary Jane Nixon
Parkin.
Bodhaine Family Ownership, 1955-1958
In 1955, Richard "Dick" Bodhaine (1929-2014) and Shirley Varley Bodhaine (born 1933)
purchased 301 Pine. Shirley had grown up very close by at 624 McKinley and was
already familiar with this neighborhood. Dick worked for Mountain States Telephone &
Telegraph.
According to the Bodhaines during a 2009 visit to the Louisville Historical Museum, they
did quite a bit of work to upgrade the house while they owned it and lived there, and
did a lot of the work themselves. They stated that they added a bathroom to the house
and made it more open inside. Also, they stated that they found that the wallpaper was
over newspaper that was over the wainscoting. They removed the wallpaper and
newspaper to reveal the original wainscoting. In addition, they arranged for a cousin
who was a carpenter to install cabinets. In 1959, they sold 301 Pine and moved away
from Louisville, but later moved back to the town.
5
