Christ the Servant Lutheran Church (CTS)
Updated Remembrance Garden Proposal
Affect on children.
We believe that children are affected by death just as adults are as they have loved ones and
friends who die. We believe that the Remembrance Garden will be a gift to talk about death and
remember their loved ones. The concern was voiced that children would have to be quieter
because of those grieving, but in contrast, we believe that grief does not exclude laughter and
that the vibrance continuing to live fully as children do, comforts many who grieve.
History and support of garden proposal.
The Remembrance Garden has been in development for 12 years. CTS congregation, staff and
church council have consistently and overwhelmingly been supportive of the Remembrance
Garden. The process has been transparent to the CTS community as there have been a number
of open meetings and discussions over the past 12 years as well as CTS newsletter articles and
emalls.
Relationship to church's mission.
CTS' mission is to be a grace -filled, welcoming community that strives to: RENEW in worship and
learning; RELATE to all God's people; RESPOND to needs outside our walls. The Remembrance
Garden fits into our mission as it will encourage learning and discussion about death and dying;
will help us provide comfort to those who are grieving; and it is the goal of CTS to take care of
its members from birth to death.
Coiumbarium clarification.
No human remains will be placed on our property, further, the City has agreed to specify that
this cannot occur. A columbarium is used to store ashes gathered from the cremation process.
Since absolutely no organic material remains after cremation, human ashes do not present any
sort of health hazard to the living or the environment. Current number of columbarium niches is
126. Any further increase in this number will need additional approval from the City of
Louisville. We will charge for niches at an amount appropriate for construction and maintenance
of the garden.
Impact on property value.
It is difficult to find conclusive evidence that indicates either an increase or decrease in property
value for homes located near a columbarium. Our revised design integrates the garden into our
existing building design and its purpose will not be apparent.
CTS and our neighbors.
CTS has been a part of the community for nearly 30 years. When we make decisions, we are
guided by our mission statement and we consider how it affects our congregation and
community. A vibrant and relevant church community engages members and among other
things allows us to maintain the property. We've tried to answer all concerns openly and
honestly. Your feedback is important and relevant to us. We have adjusted the Remembrance
Garden proposal in response to concerns.
CTS closure.
CTS is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and this national body
would take responsibility for the property if we were to close for any reason. The urns would be
transferred to other ELCA churches in the area.
Christ the Servant Lutheran Church 506 Via Apple Louisville, CO 80027
3031666-4655 * ctslcsecretary@gwestof6ce.net * ctsonline.org
