Christ the Servant Lutheran Church (CTS)
Updated Remembrance Garden Proposal
After holding a neighborhood meeting and listening carefully to feedback from our neighbors, we
have thoughtfully redesigned and moved the location of the Remembrance Garden. Below are
concerns we have heard from our neighbors at the meeting, through ernails and phone calls, as
well as how we have addressed them.
Location.
We understand that the former proposal could have been construed as too visible and in some
neighbor's front yards. We have heard you and have moved the location. The Remembrance
Garden will be moved to the northeast side of CTS. The only entrance to the Remembrance
Garden will be through the east door of the sanctuary (place where worship is held). There will
no entrance from the outside. A brick wall will surround the Remembrance Garden. The brick
will match CTS' brick. A Memorial Plaque Wall and columbarium will be included in the Garden
and will face inward toward the church.
Accessibility.
Congregational members and visitors will only be able to access the Remembrance Garden
during times that CTS is open.
Increased foot and vehicle traffic, including Funeral Processions.
A traffic engineer will be hired to access any traffic implications. Preliminary discussions show
that no negative traffic implications will occur. Funeral processions have never been a part of
any of our funeral services, nor will they ever be. We cannot predict the number of funerals per
year, but on average we have 3. Most of these are held weekdays.
Property maintenance.
We acknowledge that we have not been as diligent in maintaining the landscaping in recent
years. However, a few months ago, we invested money into hiring a landscape company and
included funds in our annual budget that will allow us to maintain the property going forward.
We will also continue to utilize the multiple volunteers who care for our property. Mementos,
flowers, and objects will not be allowed on the property other than the day of the funeral nor will
they be seen outside the Garden.
Reminder of grief and death.
We believe that death is a natural, constant and inevitable part of life. Many people in our
church, neighborhood and community are grieving the loss of loved ones on a constant basis.
The Remembrance Garden will be a sacred, peaceful, beautiful long-lasting tribute close to home
for loved ones who have passed away, as well as offers a place for the survivors to remember
and to heal.
Neighborhood notification.
The neighborhood was notified per the City of Louisville's requirements. 167 neighbors who live
within 500 feet of CTS were notified of the neighborhood meeting which was held on October 17,
2017 and attended by around a dozen people. The mailing list was created using Boulder
County's most recent records. This meeting was not a requirement of the City but rather a
courtesy of the church to get feedback on our proposal. The usual procedure for notifying
neighbors is to erect yellow signs that notify the community of an upcoming Planning
Commission meeting related to a proposed project along with a mailed notice from the City of
Louisville to neighbors within 500 feet. The meeting provided good feedback to us which we
have used to move forward.
Christ the Servant Lutheran Church 506 Via Apple Louisville, CO 80027
303/666-4655 * ctslcsecretary@gwestoffice.net * ctsonline.org
