Business Retention and Development Committee
Meeting Minutes
December 7, 2020
• Discussion- BRaD Committee Purpose and Structure: Mr. Oberholzer
commented on the ongoing discussion regarding the effectiveness and direction of
the BRaD Committee. Committee members noted that they do not have direct
access to the Council, since there is no longer a Council liaison. Ms. Butterworth
emphasized the importance of having an independent voice for the business
community. The Committee discussed their role in the business satisfaction
survey, forum event, and retention visits.
Mr. Oberholzer, Mr. Erickson, and Ms. Butterworth felt BRaD should remain a
separate committee from Economic Vitality Committee and recommend a Council
liaison be assigned, preferably one that participates on the EVC. Mr. Bolt felt there
could be value a merger of BRaD and EVC.
Public comments were heard from Mike Kranzdorf, Eric Reed, and Councilmember
Deb Fahey. Mr. Kranzdorf recognized overlap between the EVC and BRaD, but
suggested a merger would not benefit the business voice. Mr. Reed commented
that all Louisville businesses should have an independent voice. Councilmember
Fahey concurred about the value of committees in providing input to City Council.
Mr. Oberholzer proposed drafting a letter to City Council with the Committee's
recommendation.
VII. STAFF REPORT: Director Pierce provided an update on the Rose and Raven, which
is the new business intended to occupy the vacant building at 511 E. South Boulder
Road. She also provided the Committee with a copy of the Economic Vitality
Strategic Plan that was adopted by City Council on November 10, 2020. Finally, she
reviewed the extension of allowances on temporary signage for commercial
businesses.
VIII. REPORTS FROM COMMITTEE MEMBERS: None.
IX. ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING: The Committee expressed their desire to continue
with the scheduled meeting for January 4, 2021 @ 8 AM. Director Pierce will advise
the Committee about the Economic Vitality Committee meeting agenda for December
18, and if there will be a planned discussion about the BRaD Committee.
X. ADJOURNMENT: Mr. Oberholzer moved to adjourn the meeting; Ms. Butterworth
seconded the motion. Motion passed and meeting adjourned at 9:18 AM.
Agenda Packet P. 3
