City Council
Meeting Minutes
January 19, 2021
Public Comments - None
RESOLUTION NO. 5, SERIES 2021 — A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING AN EQUITY,
DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION TASK FORCE TO PROVIDE ADVISORY
RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE CITY COUNCIL
Councilmember Leh stated this is an effort to address community concerns about Equity,
Diversity, and Inclusion raised in the wake of the killing of George Floyd. This is one way
to continue to move forward the community conversation on this issue. The goal is not to
be perfect but to be excellent and hold ourselves to account.
Council asked Councilmember Leh and Councilmember Brown two work with staff to
suggest some next steps. Their first recommendation is to create a community based,
expert assisted task force to find out what are the most important issues to the
community. Council wants to hear from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)
to help us know what people think about how the City government interacts with the wider
community.
Councilmember Brown reviewed the recommendation in more detail: the task force would
be given a specific scope of work and time frame to formalize the conversations into
meaningful and actionable items to recommend for Council consideration to help create a
more equity driven community.
Councilmember Brown stated the scope of the task force is to examine how Louisville can
be a more welcoming place for BIPOC people in all areas. The task force would gather
community input and then make four to five specific recommendations for Equity,
Diversity, and Inclusion in the City government with suggested goals and tactics to use to
achieve this outcome.
He noted they are suggesting members be appointed by the City Council but that would
be based on the recommendation of a selection committee and the facilitator yet to be
hired. Members should include BIPOC, and residents and non-residents who might work
in town or have other experiences in town. The task force would give monthly updates to
Council.
The proposed resolution will need to be finalized with the sunset date determined and the
number of members. There are suggested areas to focus on of land use, transportation
and business -related issues, but there may be others Council would like to add.
Councilmember Leh noted this recommendation is not an end in itself, but is rather the
beginning of the process. He added the Council does not want to guide the task force
discussions those should come from the task force itself.
Public Comments — None.
